What hours will I be working as an apprentice?
As an apprentice you can combine time at work with training. As an apprentice you might be working full-time, part-time or school-based. Your type of employment affects the hours you work, your pay rate and your entitlements.
Note: Apprentices cannot be casual employees.
If you’re not sure what your employment is, you should check with your employer before you start.
- Full-time apprentices usually work, on average, 38 hours per week, plus reasonable additional hours.
- Part-time apprentices work, on average, less than 38 hours per week.
- School-based apprentices usually have 13 hours a week of employment and training.
Full-time and part-time apprentices receive the following entitlements:
- The same hours each week
- Holiday and sick leave
- Must be given notice before terminating employment eg. They must follow a proper disciplinary process or provide you with redundancy pay.
Reminder: Time spent at TAFE is work time, you shouldn't be made to attend the workplace an additional day.
If you are unsure of any of the above, contact The Young Workers Centre or find support here.
