It’s your employer's responsibility to keep you safe at work.
It’s your employers responsibility to:
- Provide a safe workplace
- Train staff to work safely
- Fix safety issues and provide alternative safe work
If something feels unsafe you have the right to:
- Refuse unsafe work
- Ask for instruction
- Request alternative work
- Report safety issues without fear
What could I say if I needed to refuse unsafe work?
- "I don’t know how to do that yet. Could I watch someone demonstrate that first?"
- "I don’t know how to do that yet. Could we go through how to do it together?"
- "I don’t know how to do that yet. Could we set aside some time to go through how to do it?"
- "I don’t feel safe doing this. Could I get the appropriate PPE / equipment to do this safely?"
- "I don’t feel safe doing that. What alternative work could I do instead?"
Though it’s important to notify your employer of hazards in the workplace when you see them, it’s your employers responsibility to manage and respond to hazards. It’s also your employer's responsibility to create and train employees in the relevant safety protocols specific to your job and tasks.
