Minimum rates of apprentice pay
The national minimum wage in Australia as of 1st of July 2025 is $24.95 per hour or $948.00 per 38-hour week for workers 21 years and older.
However, apprentice wages are lower. This is because you are learning and being trained in a skill for life.
Your apprentice wage may be effected by your:
- Age
- The level of school you completed
- Your industry
- Whether your workplace has an EBA
- Whether you worked at the same workplace in the same position prior to beginning your apprenticeship
Your apprentice wage usually increases in each consecutive year of your apprenticeship and once you're qualified you will earn the full amounts outlined in your award.
If you're covered by a registered agreement, check the rates in the agreement.
An employee can only be paid apprentice pay rates if they have a formal training contract with their employer. The training has to be registered and recognised by a state or territory training authority. These employees do their training through a Registered Training Organisation such as a TAFE.
