Mental Health as an Apprentice

Mental health challenges are common, and for apprentices the pressure can be even greater than most. Long hours, financial pressure, and workplace culture all play a role, and it’s worth knowing what to look out for and where to get help.

2 in 5 people experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, and for apprentices and young workers in construction – they experience significantly higher levels of psychological distress than the general population.

Why apprentices are more at risk

Starting out in a trade means navigating a steep learning curve, proving yourself to new people, and dealing with financial pressure all at once. On top of that, the culture in some workplaces makes it hard to speak up when things are tough.

One of the biggest barriers is stigma. When people don’t feel like they can ask for help, they find other ways to cope: overworking, bottling things up, drinking, or using distractions like gambling. These responses make sense in the moment, but research consistently shows us they often make things worse over time.

There are practical steps that can help:

  • Get professional support early – your GP can get you in touch with a counsellor or psychologist can help before things build up
  • Look after your body – sleep, food, and regular exercise all matter
  • Set boundaries at work – avoid constant overtime and make time to rest
  • Build better coping habits – find healthier ways to deal with stress instead of avoiding it
  • Stay connected – even small catch-ups with mates can make a difference
  • Focus on small wins – getting through a day or a week is progress

You don’t have to handle everything on your own. Joining your union gives you access to support, advice, and people who understand the pressures apprentices face. Apprentice support services can also help with work issues, training, and personal challenges before things build up.

Free support is available 24/7. Reaching out is always worth it.
